Walmart: New Alternative for Streaming Movies Online

Joining in on the online movie streaming craze is Walmart, who a little over a year ago bought video-streaming service Vudu.com.  From Walmart.com, customers can buy or rent movies through the Vudu service. Walmart is not offering subscriptions, making it more comparable to iTunes than subscription services like Netflix.

Vudu offers 20,000 titles which can be viewed on PCs and streamed through devices like PlayStation 3. So, what does this mean for TV lift cabinet owners? If your TV has internet access through a gaming device or set top box, you can stream videos to your TV lift cabinet through Walmart’s new service.

In light of Netflix’s PR nightmare and subsequent loss of customers, Walmart has thrown its name into the hat as a potential alternative. Walmart already brings in huge sales numbers for in-store movie sales as one of the nation’s top retailers. It leaves one wondering how the streaming service will affect those numbers. More and more consumers are picking convenience and the ability to instantly stream content over going to the store and purchasing or renting a physical copy. Do you prefer the Vudu/iTunes method of renting or buying or the subscription method offered by Netflix and Hulu Plus?

Apple Rumored to Buy Hulu

Hulu, the online video service, is in the market for a buyer.  Over the last few months, Hulu has been shopping around for the most lucrative offer.  While Microsoft stepped down from the bidding war, it now appears that Apple is interested.  According to a Mashable related article, two people who weren’t authorized to speak publicly, let it leak that Apple has stepped into the bidding negotiations.

With Hulu, people can enjoy directly from their TV lift cabinets, hundreds of television shows and movies for free.  To make this happen, Hulu is partnered with NBCUniversal, News Corporation, The Walt Disney Company, and Providence Equity Partners.  While people can watch free programs and movies, they do have to endure through lengthy advertisements as this is how Hulu makes money.

The bidding war may go as high as $2 billion, according to The Business Insider.  If rumor is true, Apple will be bidding against Yahoo.  The deal includes five years of programming including two years of exclusivity.

Changes Happening at Amazon and Hulu

With all the outrage over Netflix’s price hikes, many former Netflix customers have been defecting to alternate streaming services. Two services that seem to be high on consumer lists of alternatives are Amazon and Hulu.

In the wake of the Netflix uproar, new developments have emerged regarding Amazon and Hulu. Amazon’s Prime streaming video service recently struck a deal with CBS to begin streaming 2,000 TV show episodes. This means Amazon will now offer full seasons of 18 TV series.  The agreement includes episodes of “The Tudors," "Numb3rs," and “Cheers”. All content can be streamed to a computer or directly to your TV lift cabinet.

Hulu is another heavy hitter in the world of streaming TV shows and movies. The company has hired investment bankers to oversee a potential sale of their service. Yahoo has come forward as a would-be buyer, if Hulu can agree to their terms. The terms are 5 years of exclusive access to Hulu’s content. If Hulu were to agree to the offer, the service would be sold for a reported $2 billion. Hulu sources have a different take and have offered 5 years of access with much less exclusivity. Meaning other sites, such as the network website for the individual TV shows, could stream the same content.

Time will tell what happens with both services as the Netflix price increases do not go into effect until September. However, with the amount of angry consumers promising to jump ship, both Amazon and Hulu have the potential to reap the benefits.

Netflix Customers Are Furious At Drastic Price Increase

Netflix announced on their blog on Tuesday, July 12th that they plan to do away with their combined unlimited streaming and DVD by mail plans and increase pricing by 60%.  Of course, they tried to spin it as a positive solution for their customers.

“First, we are launching new DVD only plans. These plans offer our lowest prices ever for unlimited DVDs – only $7.99 a month for our 1 DVD out at-a-time plan and $11.99 a month for our 2 DVDs out at-a-time plan. By offering our lowest prices ever, we hope to provide great value to our current and future DVDs by mail members."

Now, as a Netflix customer myself and TV Lift Cabinet Owner, this paragraph clearly did not make sense to me.  Offering their lowest prices ever?  Um…how do you figure?

Let’s recap shall we.  Currently, Netflix customers enjoy an unlimited streaming plan for only $7.99 (which has not changed on their new price structure).  However, if Netflix customers wish to get DVDs by mail, they can at only a $2 increase to their unlimited streaming plan, bringing their total to only $9.99.

Now Netflix wants to do away with the combined plans.  If you wish to get both services you will have to to pay $7.99 per service, bringing your total to $15.98.  That is a $5.99 increase per month to each customer, which is a 60% increase!  I ask how are those their lowest prices ever?

Or if you look at it this way that is $71.88 per year extra customers will have to pay.  Netflix advertises that they have 23 million members.  Let’s say half have combo plans which is 11.5 million members.  Using this estimation of combo plan members, Netflix will make an extra $826,620,000 in profit per year.  Now to be fair, I understand that mailing costs have gone up, but this price increase is extremely steep.

On top of increasing their pricing by 60%, they are limiting the amount of DVDs customers get with the $7.99 unlimited DVD plan to one at a time.  As one customer pointed out, at most customers can rent seven movies per month with the three day mail delays back and forth.  That does not seem unlimited to me.

It turns out I am not the only customer to observe this steep spike in their pricing strategy.  Their blog post announcing the price change received over 11,022 comments.  I perused the first 200 comments and 198 of them were angry customers threatening to cancel.  It should be interesting to see how many of these people cancel their plans.

Last Harry Potter movie premieres this week!

Have you gotten your movie tickets yet for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows – Part 2?  J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels have been entertaining families across the world since 1997 and movies for ten years.  Now, the last movie of the Harry Potter series is being premiered this week in the United States.

The grand finale is bittersweet for those who have been following the cast of Harry Potter for these last ten years.  On the one hand folks are excited to finally seen Harry Potter (played by Daniel Radcliffe) take on the evil Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) head to head.  We have been waiting patiently for Harry Potter to grow up and finally revenge his parents’ murder.  We have also been waiting for Ron’s (Rupert Grint) and Hermione’s (Emma Watson) love story to unfold.  I am told this comes to fruition in this last movie.  However as much as we wish to see the great battle and love story between Hermione and Ron, there is still a part of us who will be sad to say goodbye to our Harry Potter family and leave this magical world.  What will we look forward to now?

If you have not seen Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows – Part 1, TV lift cabinet owners can rent this movie from On Demand or at Blockbuster.  According to the Miami Herald who gave Part 2 an excellent review, it is essential to see Part 1 in order to truly follow the storyline in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows – Part 2.

Pyeongchang, South Korea to Host 2018 Winter Olympics

The International Olympic Committee announced today that Pyeongchang, South Korea will host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. This will be the first Winter Games held in Asia outside of Japan.  Koreans celebrated the news with fireworks displays around a newly constructed ski jump in Pyeongchang. There have been two previous attempts to bring the Olympic Games to Pyeongchang –losing to Vancouver, Canada followed by Sochi, Russia four years later.

The motto for these games, “New Horizons”, reflects the 20 years that Asia has gone without hosting the Winter Olympics. The massive population and potential fan base for winter sports was an important factor in Pyeongchang’s bid. South Korea has spent billions of dollars updating infrastructure and preparing for the possibility of hosting the games. For rights to broadcast the games to your TV lift cabinet, NBC shelled out a whopping $963 million! Pyeongchang beat out Munich and Annecy, France at an International Olympic Committee’s 123rd Session in Durban, South Africa.

Hulu on Track to Reach One Million Subscribers by Summer’s End

Internet streaming service, Hulu, is on track to reach 1 million Hulu Plus subscribers by the end of the summer.  The company initially predicted that this milestone would be achieved by year’s end – putting it months ahead of schedule.

Hulu offers free streaming TV shows while Hulu Plus offers a wider array of content for $7.99 per month. Hulu Plus is not only available online but many gaming consoles such as Xbox and DVR boxes are capable of streaming Hulu Plus content to your TV lift cabinet. Although the unexpected upturn in subscribers is encouraging, obstacles still remain. Cable and satellites providers are hesitant to pay excessive sums for programming that can be obtained for free online, thus putting intense pressure on Hulu executives.

Working with a similar model is Netflix, Hulu’s largest competitor. In comparison, Netflix has over 20 million paying subscribers and recently announced plans to extend their service to Central America and the Caribbean.

New 2011 Design Trend: Trunks, Trunks, and more Trunks…

In the past year, the classic voyager trunk has inspired furniture companies across the United States.  Trunk designs have taken on new life in the form of coffee tables, cabinets, night stands and even TV lift cabinets!

The voyager trunk design brings vintage sophistication to the modern day living room. In the last few months leather, metal, wooden, and wicker trunk designs have surfaced online and in store locations.  The demand for these trunk inspired designs is so high that companies such as Restoration Hardware, Pottery Barn, and Pier 1 Imports all have created dedicated pages specifically for their trunk collections.  Clearly, the public has spoken and determined that this is what they want.

Check out our Antiquity and Bermuda Run trunk TV lift cabinets!
