The Future of 3D: ESPN Knows

During the 2010 FIFA World Cup this past summer, which drew 24.3 million viewers during the final match, ESPN conducted a survey asking viewers to share their thoughts about 3D versus HD stations. The result, though not as hotly contested as the match between Spain and Netherlands, clearly showed that viewers were not only comfortable watching sports in 3D – they even preferred it over HD.

ESPN Research + Analytics, the sports network’s research arm, used an experimental survey design in its study, which included the use of perception analyzers, eye gaze and electrodermal activity. With these new methods, ESPN was able to include factors such as overall viewing enjoyment, fatigue, novelty effect and advertising impact into its results. For fairness among 3D TV makers, the study also included five different manufacturers in its testing.

The results are said to reflect what has already been said in the industry – 3D TV-viewing is more enjoyable and does a better job of engaging fans in event-based viewing (i.e. sporting events). ESPN says it will be using the results to further developing ESPN 3D as a leader in the 3D viewing industry.

Advertisers expressed excitement for the future of 3D advertising, as the study also revealed that those who watched the same ad in 2D and 3D could better recall the advertisement in 3D than 2D, as cued recall jumped from 68 percent (2D) to 83 percent (3D) and the intent to purchase a product based on a 3D ad jumped from 49 percent to 83 percent. The “enjoyment” of an ad also rose from 67 percent (2D) to 84 percent (3D).

The spark for the study was prompted just as news reports were starting to question whether 3D TV programming, and 3D TVs, is a worthwhile investment. ESPN 3D was one of the first large-scale 3D channels on the market, which ESPN is clearly using as a “test case” for other stations considering offering 3D programming.

To address any concerns over the safety of viewing 3D TV and wearing 3D glasses for long periods of time, participants were tested before and after the survey, and the study found that there no adverse side effects on depth perception and participants adjusted well to 3D over time and under normal use.

So it seems that 3D TV is around to stay. Good news, given that 3D TVs are on everyone’s holiday wishlist in 2010!

Leather on a TV Lift

[caption id="attachment_645" align="alignright" width="275" caption="Notting Hill TV Lift Cabinet"]Notting Hill TV Lift Cabinet[/caption]

While ImportAdvantage prides itself on its commitment to the quality hardwood craftsmanship found on most of its TV lift cabinets, we are also committed to providing the best choices in the TV lift industry for our customers. This is why we have created a TV lift cabinet that is finished in fine Swedish leather.

Both the Notting Hill TV Lift Cabinet and the Notting Hill XS TV Lift Cabinet are wrapped on all five sides in hand-cut, beautifully upholstered Swedish Leather. In both models, you can choose any one of four shades of leather for your foot of the bed TV lift cabinet – brown, black, tan or bone.

These leather-covered TV lift cabinets still include a pre-installed, ultra-quiet TV lift mechanism and built-in Infrared Relay System, allowing you complete control of your TV and media players. And they are perfect for small spaces, at the foot of your bed, the center of a room or against any wall in your home. The only thing that makes them different is the application of beautiful Swedish leather.

Before you order your Notting Hill or Notting Hill XS TV lift cabinet, please note that delivery will take an extra three weeks because the leather for each pop-up TV cabinet is specially selected and handcrafted for each customer order by specially-skilled artisans who are experienced in this medium. But rest assured, the attention to detail will be reflected in the additional time it takes to bring you this amazing leather console.

The ‘Techiest’ of TV Remotes: The iPad/iPhone

Welcome to the new era of channel-surfing! Two weeks ago, Comcast released its new Xfinity TV app for the iPhone and iPad, which acts as a remote control and TV guide for most Comcast-compatible TV boxes. The free app connects to your DVR or cable set-top boxes, and after logging in, you can manage each DVR unit or cable box you own. Then, after entering your zip code and choosing your channel offerings, the app loads on your mobile device an interactive, searchable TV guide, from which you can select the show you want to watch and your TV will either change to that channel or your DVR will set to record it.

The remarkable difference between Comcast’s Xfinity TV app and a traditional remote control is that you don’t have to be in the same room as your TV to control it. Since the iPhone and iPad connect to the Internet, you can be sipping coffee at a café with your friends (or standing in line buying Christmas presents) while setting up to record the season premiere of your favorite show. And in a home with different boxes running to multiple TVs, the Xfinity TV app can accommodate every member of your family.

While the app does not allow you to watch TV on your iPhone or iPad (yet), the ability to manage your home TV and DVR, search for shows, browse On-Demand listings, filter results by genre, network and more, makes this app many times more useful than the TV guide in your newspaper or scrolling through your service provider’s guide channel just to find something interesting to watch.

And not to leave out the many Android fans, Comcast has also announced plans to release the Xfinity TV app to the Android Market sometime in December, but it is not yet known if that app will support streaming video playback, which is a feature already being planned for in a future update for the iPad app.

However, don’t throw away your TV remote just yet. You’ll still need it to turn your TV on/off, as well as adjust the volume. But who knows, in a couple more months there may be a mobile app that does that too, but can you also set it up to extend your recliner? Only time and technology will tell.

Hottest TV for Black Friday: VIZIO XVT3SV Series TV

[caption id="attachment_637" align="alignright" width="384" caption="VIZIO XVT3SV Series TV"]Vizio TV[/caption]

Happy Black Friday!

Landing on Mashable’s list of Top 10 holiday gifts for 2010, the VIZIO XVT3SV Series TV is expected to be one of the, if not “the,” hottest-selling TVs this year because of its value and high-tech features.

An incredible, mercury-free and energy-efficient display that includes TruLED backlighting, which has the ability to brighten and dim the TV image independently across the entire screen, not just along the edges, the VIZIO XVT3SV’s 1080p full HD video display is available in 42-inch, 47-inch and 55-inch models. Exceeding the new ENERGY STAR 4.1 Guidelines, the VIZIO XVT3SV will also not drop the bottom out of your energy bill every month.

With its super-sharp 10,000,000-to-1 contrast ratios and 240Hz SPS Refresh Rate, it can project more accurate black and white levels than nearly any other competitor in its price range. But what really sets this unit apart is the accessibility to Vizeo’s Internet Apps and ability to stream media services like Amazon Video On Demand, Netflix and Pandora directly to the TV, without needing an additional media player. Pandora, especially, should sound incredible thanks to the SRS TruSurround HD premium audio processing and SRS TruVolume, which eliminates volume inconsistencies between programming.

Another feature that lands the VIZIO XVT3SV Series TV in the spotlight is a built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi, which means you don’t have to run an Internet ethernet cable to the TV. And to put its Internet-capable functions to work, the included Vizio VUR10 remote control connects to the TV via Bluetooth and has an integrated slide out QWERTY keyboard.

As with any new TV purchase, customers are looking for value and longevity, and while the VIZIO XVT3SV Series TV may have its display marginally outshone over the next five years, competitors will find it difficult to pack so many features into one home theater system for a rock-bottom price, which retails at just under $1,300 for the 42” class.

Backed by a company that has recently experienced unprecedented growth and consumer endorsement, VIZIO has become producers of the #1 LCD and LED Backlit HDTVs in North America, according to its market shares and revenue.

So will your holiday shopping list include a new VIZIO XVT3SV Series TV? We want to know. Share your comments below.

Product Focus: Soho Fireplace (Happy Thanksgiving!)

[caption id="attachment_633" align="alignright" width="275" caption="Soho Fireplace TV Lift"]Soho Fireplace TV Lift[/caption]

Right now hopefully everyone is enjoying a tasty Thanksgiving meal with friends and family, only to enjoy the post-meal nap or football game. But wouldn’t it be great to watch the game while cozying up to a warm fireplace at the same time? This dream can come true with the Soho Fireplace and TV lift by ImportAdvantage. Both a handcrafted TV lift cabinet and a working 33” electric fireplace, the Soho Fireplace is a true work of inspiration and a perfect fit for a winter’s day.

Both the fireplace and TV lift cabinet come with a remote control, so you won’t need to leave the couch to warm your hands or channel surf to your favorite show. The Soho Fireplace also features two neatly concealed doors that open to shelves for storing your media players.

The handcrafted Poplar cabinet comes in either an Espresso or Caramel finish (your choice), and the TV is fully protected from the fireplace’s heat because of a full partition wall that blocks high temperatures. The fireplace can also be used with or without heat, but is capable of 5,000 BTUs.

The Soho Fireplace and TV lift cabinet can hold a TV measuring up to 56” wide and weighing up to 130 pounds. It fits perfectly against any wall in your home, including in the bedroom.

So as you are enjoying the company of your guests this Thanksgiving and planning out tomorrow’s high-spirited Black Friday, think about how a new Soho Fireplace will look in your living room this Christmas.

Kinect Sales Top 1 Million Units in 10 Days!

[caption id="attachment_629" align="alignright" width="410" caption="Microsoft Kinect"]Kinect[/caption]

Microsoft’s Kinect, an extension for Xbox 360 gaming consoles that brings games to life by body movement, needing no controllers, wires or gadgets, just announced that it has sold more than one million units during the first 10 days of its release. This absolutely blows away its competition, the Sony Move for PlayStation3, which hasn’t sold a million units yet, and it has been on the market since September.

So what makes the Kinect such a hot commodity? It may have something to its futuristic capabilities to translate one’s body movements, even the sound of your voice, into digital movements. Want to drive a race car? Just grab an imaginary steering wheel and go for it. It’s the new wave of full body gaming, and it may charge in a new era of integrating gaming consoles into a majority of people’s households.

Of course, some of the Kinect’s fandom may be due to Oprah publicly embracing it on her show in October. Oprah, along with a few of her audience members, danced away to the Dance Central game on-air. And many of the technologically-enhanced gamers out there are already finding ways to stretch its open-source limits in the worlds of virtual reality (VR) and 3D video effects.

With Black Friday not even here yet, Microsoft is estimating that it will sale at least another million units before Christmas. A word to the wise, though, is that there is some degree of safe use needing to be stressed, as there have been a few cases (and tons of YouTube videos) of users bumping into one another and household objects while throwing themselves into a game.

Priced off-the-shelf at $150 per unit, with games running just under $50, Microsoft is making a concerted effort to push the envelope of holiday sales. The company has set aside $500 million to advertise the Kinect and its games (currently, the top-selling Kinect game is Kinect Sports. The second is Oprah’s pick, Dance Central).

Of course, users must already have an Xbox 360, but there will be an entirely new sect of consumers who will spring for the whole package because the Kinect has tipped the scales in Microsoft’s favor, perhaps beating out the Nintendo Wii or Sony PS3 this holiday shopping season, but only time will tell.

3D TVs on Everyone’s Holiday Wishlist

Likely to be the hottest TV gift this holiday season, 3D TVs are steadily rising in popularity and in technological capabilities. Couple that with a steady drop in prices, what more could customers ask for?

As the media entertainment envelope continues to be pushed, moving from HD to Blu-ray and now 3D, the movie industry will continue to play to the highest bidder, and right now that’s the 3D niche. In 2010, there were 25 3D movies released in theaters, and all of those, of course, were or will be released in 3D DVD versions. In 2011, the number of 3D movies is expected to top 30.

And by now everyone has heard that Lucasfilm Ltd. will be rereleasing the entire Star Wars saga in 3D, which will of course be followed by 3D DVDs. In Europe, Sky 3D is the world’s first full-time 3D TV station, which brings sports, movies and entertainment to its customers in 3D 100 percent of the time.

Many of the 3D TV holiday specials this year will feature TV kits that include free 3D-viewing glasses (required to view 3D movies) and a free Blu-ray player. Purchased on their own, these “freebies” could add about a $700 value to your purchase.

And in line with the industry-wide popularity of slim screens, all the major producers of 3D TVs are creating flat, wide screens. Viewing a film in 3D requires a screen large enough to fill a viewer’s field of vision or the effect is lost. 3D TVs measuring up to 65 inches is not uncommon.

As a bonus, many of today’s 3D TVs are also “smart” TVs, meaning they come Internet-ready and streaming-capable.

So which 3D TVs are the best to put on your holiday wishlist in 2010? Well, that is debatable, especially since many of the current 3D TV manufacturers are using different technologies and materials, delivering a variety of results, but many 3D connoisseurs agree that a Top 10 list should look something like this (in no particular order):

- Panasonic TX-P65VT20B

- Sony KDL-60LX903

- Sony KDL-52HX903

- Sony KDL-40HX803

- Samsung UE55C9000

- LG 55LX9900

- Philips Cinema 21:9 Platinum

- Samsung LE46C750

- Samsung 40C7000

- LG 47LD950

Would agree with these picks? Do you own a 3D TV? We would love to hear about your 3D home-viewing experience. Leave us a comment.

A Tight Squeeze? How You Can Fit Your Media Players in a TV Lift Cabinet

While we make every effort to build TV lift cabinets that can accommodate a wide variety of media players and wiring, a few combinations of DVD players and surround sound systems may be a tight squeeze in a TV lift cabinet, but don’t worry, we have easy solutions for you.

First, double-check the measurements listed for the TV lift cabinet you are planning to purchase. You can do this easily with our Measurement Guide. For cabinet depth, most of our models have 16” shelves, and for some that might not provide enough clearance in the back, so here’s what you can do to make your media players fit.

If your cables protrude too much from the back of your media player, we recommend purchasing 90-degree angle connectors for all your cables which will shorten them greatly. These connectors can be found at most electronics stores.

But if this still doesn’t allow you enough room in your TV lift cabinet, you can clear up more space by making a simple cut. The partition walls in our TV lift cabinets is only 5/8” thick, and cutting a clearance hole for you media player cables will give you the extra needed space with minimal effort.

If you are still concerned that your media players won’t fit, please don’t hesitate to contact our customer service staff before making a purchase, as we may be able to provide some additional tips for your situation.

What Makes the Rack and Pinion System the Best for TV Lift Mechanisms

[caption id="attachment_433" align="alignright" width="275" caption="TV Lift Mechanism"]TV Lift Mechanism ImportAdvantage[/caption]

A rack and pinion system is pair of gears that converts rotational motion into linear motion, and it is the reliable system that ImportAdvantage has chosen for all its TV lift mechanisms. We believe this system to be the most secure, efficient and quiet option for raising and lowering your flat-screen plasma TV on demand and by the touch of a button.

The rack and pinion system is not only used for TV lift cabinets. In fact, it was invented just about as soon as the wheel was invented, as the wheel is a nothing more than a round cog that moves along a linear surface. The rack and pinion system is used for pulling trains along steep slopes by engaging the circular pinion gear on the bottom of a train to a rack railway between the rails on a railroad. The rack and pinion system is also commonly found in steering mechanisms in steered vehicles. It is what gives a car its responsiveness and the driver a “feel” for the road.

When ImportAdvantage set out to make the best TV lift mechanism on the market, we invested our time and research into finding what will work, without fail, for our customers. It was clear that the dependability of the rack and pinion system would more than meet our needs, and after satisfying over 20,000 customers since 2003, we are more than confident in the design of our TV lift mechanisms.

How You Can Customize Your TV Lift Cabinet

ImportAdvantage not only makes fine hardwood TV lift cabinets that arrive to your door ready for use, but we also make our handcrafted models easily customizable so they can perfectly match your home décor and media needs. We do this by offering a variety of adjustability options and cabinet door inserts.

While all of our TV lifts are sold with solid hardwood cabinet door fronts (except on our signature Remington or Soho Electric Fireplaces and TV lifts), we also include (on many models) an optional speaker cloth panel that can be used in place of the solid wood cabinet doors, allowing you the freedom to store your surround sound speakers inside our handcrafted TV lift cabinet.

Another key feature of the customizability of our TV lift cabinets is shelf adjustability. In TV lift models that have wood shelves, you can easily adjust the height of each shelf to what suits your needs. If you need space for tall books, you can space the shelves far apart; if you need them closer together to store CDs that is easy too. Perhaps you just want to remove the shelves altogether so you can store your speakers while using the speaker cloth panels – no problem. We give you the freedom to customize your TV lift cabinet the way that you want it.

The real convenience of this customization is that when you order your TV lift cabinet from ImportAdvantage, you don’t have to specify these options, as they all come standard in the models that have them, so you can switch back and forth between wood or speaker cloth panels whenever you want.

ImportAdvantage TV Lifts Faster than the Competition

ImportAdvantage’s signature TV lift, known as the Uplift, raises TVs to full-extension at the rate of nearly 1”/second, making it faster than many of its competitors. And those with faster rising rates risk jarring your flat-screen TV and are typically louder than the ImportAdvantage Uplift mechanism.

So ImportAdvantage not only provides a quality, durable rack and pinion TV lift, but they have struck the fine balance of speed, whisper-quiet operation and unbeatable low prices in their products. And they have made this quality lift easy to install – taking less than five minutes from start to finish.

The Uplift TV lift has another key feature that sets it apart from its competitors – its ability to accept a range of TV sizes. Most other TV lifts are restricted to hold a TV within a 10” span, so if you decide you want to upgrade your TV after already investing in a TV lift, you are faced with purchasing a new lift mechanism for your TV. With the Uplift, most of the larger units can hold TVs that are almost 30” apart in size, so your new TV upgrade won’t break the bank.

Speed, silence, hyper-fast set-up and versatility – these are the features that make up the ImportAdvantage Uplift TV lift mechanisms.  Check them out today!

Why Pop-Up TV Lifts are Better than Flip-Down TV Lifts

ImportAdvantage specializes in top-quality TV lifts and pop-up TV cabinets. It is an industry we have led since 2003, culminating from over 25 years experience building and designing custom furniture, and we have a lot of confidence in our products. So when we see other products on the market that are meant to move or hide your TV, we like to illustrate what makes our TV lifts the best in design and functionality.

Some companies are now offering flip-down TV lifts, which fold down to expose a TV from the ceiling. Before you consider purchasing one of these, consider for a moment some of the limitations inherit in their design.

First, these types of flip-down TV lifts are typically limited to handling small TVs. Some can hold larger TVs (up to 200 lbs.), but only if your ceiling is capable of securing that much weight. And installing a flip-down TV lift is committing your TV to only one spot in the house, viewable from only one angle. What if you put one in your bedroom and a few months later you want to rearrange your bedroom suite? It’s not easy to move a flip-down TV lift once it has been installed. If you had a foot of the bed TV lift cabinet from ImportAdvantage, you could move it just as easily as any other piece of bedroom furniture.

Another drawback of the flip-down TV lift is that your TV is still visible when not in use. Part of the beauty of a handcrafted TV lift cabinet is that it completely hides your TV when you are not using it. And what about your media players? They fit nicely in an ImportAdvantage cabinet, but where do they go on a flip-down TV lift – nowhere.

So before you settle on a flip-down TV lift, consider these limitations and check out our full line of beautifully crafted TV lift cabinets.
